Still undecided
I have been told by a fellow Xangan that I should not comment about my political views on other people’s sites but on my own blog. At first, I was a bit miffed by this, since the person telling me this (after she called me rude) informed everyone in her comment which candidate for whom she would be casting her vote while saying this. Then I decided that she is probably right about my commenting (but not the rude part) since I can get a bit verbose at times, not everyone wants to talk politics and we all will have our own ideas about what issues are most important and how best to address them…
So, this will be a blog about politics, but I do not want to tell anyone how they should or shouldn’t vote. I am not even entirely sure how I will vote at this time, so you will not be told for whom you should vote here! I think Jim Wallis gives us some really good advice in his last Sojourners article:
With two months to go, the questions will certainly be raised. The most important one that is emerging is which ticket will be most able to reach out to many people in the middle in both parties, and the all-important political independents. Facts will be important. Whose tax policies will most benefit low-income and middle-class families? Who has a plan to reverse the economic downturn? Who has the smartest strategy for countering the real threats of terrorism? And who has the best and most comprehensive response to the full range of moral issues that are of deep concern to people of faith?
Now, all four of the political figures on their respective party tickets have been shown to have compelling personal stories. All four are “real people,” as the slogan goes. But this election must not just be about personalities, or inspiring personal histories; it must be about the issues, the records, the leadership, and the facts. May God help us to stay focused on that. Last week belonged to the Democrats, this week to the Republicans. Now, after the showy conventions of the past two weeks, the real work of this election can begin.
I will share some of my own observations and concerns here and I also welcome any feedback that anyone who wishes to comment might have since there are so very few of us with the time to track down all the facts to debunk the myths, scare tactics, innuendo and rumors. I ask only that you keep it civil and keep it completely factual. No one should be frightened or intimidated into making his or her choice for any leadership position. Who even wants a bully for a leader? I believe that we each must look into our own lives, minds and hearts to make that decision and after we learn as much as we possibly can about what we each value most, then prayerfully consider which candidate might be the most capable champion of our causes.
My life involves the food pantry at our church. Many of the concerns I have about the future of our country have been brought to my attention as I have worked there:
I have seen such hurting inflicted on this great nation with the leadership we have had the last 8 years. Unemployment is over 6% now–the highest it has been for nearly a decade. The “business” at our own church food pantry has tripled in that time from 30 to 35 families to 90 to 100 families needing help every week. (And these families aren’t even “allowed” to come every week, so there are actually even more than this!) Our food sources are being threatened not by terrorists, but by the gutting of resources and regulations put in place to protect U.S.consumers in the name of “business and economic interests.” Recall notices from the food bank partner agency network fill my email box every week because food businesses can continue operations and distribution of tainted food supplies until they are inspected by our now overburdened FDA, then just issue recall notices when they finally get inspected and write off the cost of recalled food. The only ones that ever make the news are the ones where illness and/or death can be actually attributed to a specific food source, but trust me, there are many, many more…
Outside of the church food pantry, I also worry about the welfare of our nation. Even though we enjoyed widespread support from many other nations after 9/11, the foreign policy choices that the current leadership has made since then have left us with very few other nations on “speaking” terms now, If the all other ones we have angered decided to join forces & finish us off, we would probably be toast! I believe that the only reason we have not had to deal with that scenario is that most of the other nations seem even less desirous of peace then we are and thankfully, would not be able to work together against a common foe. From what I know so far, McCain intends to follow the same course regarding business interests and foreign policy…
On the other side of the aisle, we have Obama, a very unknown quantity that has people so worried and nervous they are sending out emails & blogging about how we will be forced to burn our Bibles & be given copies of the Koran…
I am still furious with Obama for being willing to forgive U.S. communications corporations for not standing up to our current government when they were asked to BREAK THE LAW and violate our civil liberties in the name of fighting terrorism. A law has very little “teeth” if it is not enforced! Either those corporations are accountable or our government needs to relinquish the power it has to force corporations to act in an unethical manner and neither of these issues have been addressed to my satisfaction…
Obama’s acceptance speech did give me hope that many of the marginalized in our society could have a chance to actually live better lives. Before I worked in the food pantry, I used to think that people just needed to get a job and work their way up, but I have learned that there are some major roadblocks for many people along the way that are not always obvious to the outside observer. (Many at our own church, especially the well-to-do, still don’t really see any roadblocks.) No matter where you go, you find those folks that didn’t get the memo that you do have to put forth SOME effort, the world doesn’t owe you a living and if you need help you might not get just exactly what you want if you have to get it from someone else. Everyone likes to think those are the kind of folks that come to the pantry, but there are so many more that come willing to do what they can to try and help us in return for helping them. When they come, they ask to wash out the coffeepot, sweep the floor, lift the heavy boxes and that sort of thing, because they WANT to feel like they can provide for their families. I’ve even learned about some other not-so-obvious things like if you get your lights turned off because you cannot pay your bill, you have to not only be able to pay your bill but also additional money to get power restored. If you do not have the money to pay your bill, where do you get even MORE money to turn the lights back on? I’ve learned that if a child in one of these families gets sick or injured, they usually lose everything, since they rarely have jobs that offer any health benefits. We see many families come to the pantry after the father gets laid off from or injured on a job that is so dangerous and/or low-paying, there is no safety net for that family. Some turn to drugs and alcohol, draining the already meager family resources. Some women, faced with the daunting task of taking care of their families on their own, opt for abortion instead, which must break the heart of our God who finds every life so precious and valuable…

Well thank you for expressing your opinion. That lady may have gotten mad but I would never get mad or call someone rude for expressing their opinion on my site. Feel free at any time. I do not think we will be burning our Bibles or accepting the Koran any time soon, but my worry isn’t with the candidates themselves but more of who they are being backed by. More correctly who they’re getting their pockets lined from. Obama is being backed by the Muslim community and the communist community. This is a great worry because we arn’t just electing Obama. We are electing his whole party public and private. If someone is lining your pockets with money I very highly doubt that you would suddenly turn your back on them. These are just some of my concerns. I’m curious as to what you think of Palin? Any comments?
@Simbathe2nd -i agree that we do have to be mindful of the sort of people supporting our potential leaders. look what some of bush’s backers have managed to do to us! my personal feeling about the Muslim thing is that mainstream ones (majority of them) don’t seem to have any plans for world domination or anything like that, they just want to try to minimize the prejudice & discrimination that they have no doubt had to deal with since 9/11 (i.e.–i did not even know what a “towelhead” was before then) and a president with Muslim ties would make that more likely….
almost everything i have heard about palin seems like it will ultimately be good for the mccain ticket. he made a very wise choice there. my main concerns with her are her affiliation with the oil industry during this time when we REALLY need to be exploring other options for national security reasons & her radical anti-abortion stance. i was a young girl before roe v. wade & i know from experience that as long as people still want abortions, there will be abortions. the rich will travel to other countries that permit them (as two of my college roomies did) & the poor will take their chances with coat hangers & back alley butchers, raising the “death toll” even higher, masking the emotional fallout from abortion behind the veil of secrecy & shame…
You sound so much like me. Right now I’m so squarely seated on the fence that if I had to choose today, I just couldn’t do it. Maybe there will be some revelations in the next 60 days that will help us make the right decision. Hugs.
@fratmom - that’s what i am praying for, too, because right now i don’t have a really good feeling about either of them…
I think you have put up a truely awesome blog, and I am sorry someone was so nasty – they’re the one who is rude, not you! Of course, since I am South African, I have little opinion as far as American politics goes….((HUGS))
@meganbarnard - thank you for the kind words. it takes a bit of the sting out of getting blocked and having my comments deleted, too. politics in the states right now seems to be bringing out the opinions of everyone here…
Well thought out! Nicely said! I”m still thinking
On the issues and facts.
Supreme Court – McCain’s favorite justices are Alito and Roberts. He promises more appointments like them. Obama disagrees with Scalia on his interpretation of the Constitution and believes Thomas was not qualified when appointed.
Abortion - McCain will seek to elimintate Roe v. Wade Obama will uphold it.
Economy – McCain has previously stated that he is not as well versed on economic issues. He also said he seeks counsel on economic issues from Phil Gramm former Governor of Texas. Most recently Gramm has acted as a lobbyist for UBS the largest international banking firm to go bankrupt due largely to their investments in subprime mortgage loans. The McCain campaign claims that Obama will raise everyone’s taxes in spite of the fact that Obama says he plans to give $1000 tax break to middle income earners and raise taxes on those who earn over $250,000.
Health Care/Insurance – Obama plans to push for affordable health care for all Americans. McCain has no such plans. I don’t know how difficult or impossible the task will be but only the candidate that attempts to try has a shot of achieving that goal.
The war in Iraq - I don’t need to state the obvious. One candidate is for it. One against it.
I think the choices are stark and clear. Without stating how anyone should vote or what they think of these issues. This choice is not a puzzler. It is crystal clear depending on which candidate you agree with.
@theredpanda917 - i was hoping you would drop by and contribute to my little political forum. i know that you are well versed in this area…
@FlashFosgitt - There is a lot going on in the campaign that is about personality and character. Most of it is negative campaigning and unhelpful and not germaine to running the country. We could be sidetracked by the mudslinging or refuse to participate – ignore it. I say focus like a lazer on the the facts and issues. I recommend that people ignore emails. That is the domain of spammers, scammers attempting to steal your bank account information, trojan horses and viruses smear campaigns.
don’t let anyone tell you what you can or can’t say, either here or in comments. If they don’t like it, they can delete it or block you. It’s a response to a blog. A comment. It should be welcomed.
As for the politics… I live in Oz… we think you are all crazy anyway, regardless who is voted in
@Someone - thanks for your encouragement & kind words. before this is over, i may want to live in oz, too…
I didn’t know about the xangan rule regarding politics but I am very careful what I say about that anywhere. It should be very interesting. I’m praying that who ever is elected that it is God’s choice.
More irony… what you have written about is what I did not write about, but what was on my mind. I thought for a moment, to heck with it all, I don’t need Xanga, or any of this drama, and then I remembered why I came here. I think with the elections everyone is a little testy… I am going to ride it out. The paragraph, I said I left out in my post…. this is what is was about.
Anyway, I think I have the link fixed for the video and would greatly appreciate it if you would go and check it if works from your site, because it seems what works on mine does not always work on others.
Peace, Love and Energy,
Tricia
@Miss_Spunky91 - You took the words right out of my mouth! I didn’t know such a rule existed (and I don’t think it does – that lady may be making it up), but I’m also praying that the person elected is God’s choice.
To FlashFosgitt – the election years, as some people have said, bring out quite the worse in a lot of people. Even my own country’s people.
Being a Christian means sticking to your own values..
Thank you for making people THINK! I am so concerned that people are going to vote for the wrong reasons in this election. I know I am praying hard about who I will vote for. American really needs a leader that can make some positive changes. Ultimately, GOD is the answer to America’s woes, but I know that most people don’t consider Him at all. I pray He will have mercy on us. God please bless America.
Great post! I agree with you whole heartedly. I’m curious if the debates will help me choose.
Hope you are doing well. I think I have my choice made. In any case I know that God will have His way.
@Miss_Spunky91 - @VersaGratis - @DanishDoll - @lindaintennessee - you are so right. it is God’s choice ultimately and that choice will be part of the Master plan. i just hope we are not looking at some old testament-type scenarios complete with assyrian-type characters…
@Ms_Greenjeans - i hope they tell us a lot about each of the candidates & all of the voters will be more informed than they are now. the only time i thought i was near making a decision, i found myself to be riding a wave of feel-good emotions. that realization made me decide that i needed to know more than i do right now before i make my choice…
Wanna wrestle?!?
There is a trap out there that people fall into all the time. It is almost unavoidable.
It seems that people want to watch controversy. Nobody wants to watch people coming to an agreement or a compromise. That is boring, and it does not promote ratings. Or so it is presented.
I have my political opinions – but I keep them to myself. If somebody wants to know what they are they can ask me privately and we can discuss them. I am not interested in putting on a show, calling people names, or being in a verbal wrestling match.
Now, if you have a good pillow or some jello – that’s a different story!
@Donkey_Guy_10 - yup, i fell into it it…..face first!
What helped me decide who I will vote for was listening to the Warren interviews with both candidates, same questions radically different answers. Very easy to spot rhetoric over substance.
Heather
I so admire you and all the work you do at the food pantry. Don’t know if I’ve mentioned that before, but it is worth repeating. I typically don’t discuss politics, although I do a lot of homework during most elections. I’ve made up my mind after months of research and information. Just be open minded, listen, read, pray and seek God’s will for your vote, and I know you will be blessed with confidence in that respect.
Spazzz says its time to collect dues! Pay up or else she says! I don’t know what the “or else” is – but its what she says!
@wondering04 - i watched a lot of that, too. i didn’t get much from mccain except for the fact that he was a p.o.w. so we need to win this war (& any others we start) & also that he believes that life begins at conception, so all abortions should be illegal. obama’s answers were more directly related to the questions, but each candidate was instructed NOT to go into detail about how they would implement the policies that they proposed, which makes it difficult to assess how realistic each of the plans might have been…
I use industrial strentgh duct tape t keep my head from exploding, but blood still shoots out my eyes, I don’t see a difference really in either the Demopublicans or the Republicrates, same pooh, different side of the pile.
So where does this leave me . . . screwed I guess since no third party candidate has a legitimate chance of getting elected.
But then again, why do we focus so much on the office that doesn’t really have that much power to really do anything? It’s time to kick all the morons in the House of Representatives and the Senate out and start over. and get rid of the damned Electoral College.
So I guess what I’m saying right now is that in the Spirit of Barrack Hussein Obama when it comes time to actually vote, I’ll say present.
Peace
I don’t do politics. Well I *do* but not publicly, but this year I am in a turmoil. I am so worried about the right moral choice… ’nuff said!
“I have my political opinions – but I keep
them to myself. If somebody wants to know what they are they can ask me
privately and we can discuss them.”
Alternatively, I could speculate which political party a donkey is more likely to prefer…..
You can say whatever you want in a comment, they can block you or delete it,to make a fuss over it was asinine of them. If it is a political post then by all means share your thoughts, if they do not want comments they should not enable them.
I am sick of people and their drama on here, and their touchiness ,if you don’t agree they are hurt….pssffff
I love ya~
