  • 2nd Chances

Because of all the other stuff happening around here lately, it looked like I was not going to get to donate a painting to the George Washington Carver Museum this year for their community education fundraiser. More and more, I have found myself needing to pare down not just our possessions, but some of the activities we do as well. I was quite sad about this since I have been doing this for several years now and have always enjoyed sharing my work for such a great cause. Well, it turned out that the deadline to submit paintings got extended to the end of the month and I got to do it after all. Yay for second chances!

Generally, I am a pretty traditional artist, but this year, I felt like mixing media and going 3-D for a change. I wanted to use up some nice card stock that I had from sample folders for products no longer offered by Mary Kay and got the idea of cutting it and forming it into shapes. I played around with the shapes, attached them to my acrylic-painted background and got this result:

Abstract was never a style that I felt really at home with, but somehow, this piece ended up going in that direction. Sometimes, it is difficult to predict how a painting will turn out and other times, it ends up looking just like the the little picture in my head that gave me the idea in the first place. This one was definitely the former and it was also one where I felt much more influenced by ideas and feelings outside of myself than usual. It is titled “Heart Ablaze” and I am still not quite sure how I feel about about it, so I would welcome comments and/or feedback.

  • Used to be I would try to be the first to view Donkey guy. Now I am viewing a late night post by his wife. The curly stuff reminds me of springs that used to power mechanical devices. The rectangular thing in the heart reminds me of a door which people interprete as a doorway to the heart. Not a bad piece of art.

  • Heart ablaze sounds like a GREAT title for that piece of artwork. It suits it perfectly!

  • I’m not an art critic, but I know what I like, and I like it.

  • More art please!

  • Very creative…good job!!

  • @PPhilip - glad you like it@addyorable - always nice to see that others have some of the same perspectives that i do…though differences also make the world a very interesting place@ata_grandma - cool!@Aloysius_son - if you get impatient waiting for me to post more art, one of my facebook photo albums (entitled “my art”) has a bunch of stuff in it that i have done over the years. most of my later work is on walls, though not mounted & framed, just hastily applied with brush & roller with a monochromatic thing going on, though the trim is a bit darker than the walls, both in our home and at the home where daughter & son-in-law now live…@dingdongdingbat - thanks

  • The title makes it! (as is often the case with abstracts). I hope it goes for a tidy sum for a good cause!

  • @murisopsis - it would be nice to have it go for a tidy sum…lots of charity work for me this week: the painting went to the museum for display yesterday and later this week i will be donating a mary kay gift basket for another fundraiser being conducted by some of my favorite businesswomen friends whose hearts are all SO generous–i have been on two habitat for humanity “build sessions” with them and many of them have done even more than that! also considering “sponsoring” one of the young ladies in need when i drop off some formals and fancy dresses later this week that my daughter gave me to donate to the “fairy godmother foundation” started by another dear biz owner friend

  • Beautiful work … and I love the name you’ve given it too! Wondering how you’re doing … it’s been awhile! Did you know that the Xanga we’ve come to know and love is going to close on July 15th?! If so, I was wondering where you’ll be blogging … I’ve moved over to Blogger, as have many of us. They say if they raise the money for Xanga to keep it up and running, they will move over to WordPress and be called Xanga 2.0. I don’t want to ‘pay’ to blog, nor do others I’ve talked to, and Blogger is free. Hope to hear from you soon as we only have until a week from Saturday to download our archives here …. you can do that by going to your ‘settings’ page, then scrolling down and clicking ‘Xanga Archives’ … there you’ll need to create them and wait 24 hours, go back and download each .zip file. It’s easy … I’ve done it already … didn’t want to lose all my ‘journaled’ memories! Hope you have a great Independence Day! Blessings to you! – Deborah <><

  • I see this was an April post. I thought I visited you since then but maybe I was mistaken. I am sometimes, mistaken. Hope you got a nice amount for your painting!

  • @mcbery - i really must get by the museum or call someone and find out…pretty sure it did sell since it was featured in the brochure and everyone was so excited to meet me the night of the opening (which i was not expecting!) been so busy elsewhere that i have just not had time to find out, so thanks for the reminder and good to see that you have not bailed on xanga
