  • Decisions…..decisions…..

Found out today that it is going to cost over $400 to fix our 8 year old fridge.

Initially, when the repair guy said it would be more like $250 to fix and I thought that it would be fixed before he left today, I did not even consider replacing it, because I really have enjoyed the bottom freezer with an icemaker and a new one with those features no doubt cost a good bit more than the more expensive estimate, even if I went back to the scratch & dent place where I found this one. If it were any older, I’d say we needed a new one and any younger I would say just fix it, but this seems to be a “gray area” where I am having trouble making up my mind…

The parts need to be ordered and will not be here for about a week. Then we need to schedule another appointment to actually get it repaired. Our little drink fridge in the utility room is already overflowing, even after removing several cases of drinks and pitching a lot of stuff from the ailing fridge that I am not willing to eat since we really do not know how long it has not been doing its job properly. But then if we get a new one, we will be taking time to find what we need and then still needing to wait for delivery anyway…

If we locate a suitable replacement soon, cooking would be a bit more “user friendly” since we would not be going into the laundry room for cold stuff and laundry will be a lot less bother not having to work around the cases of drinks on the floor, too. But how much cooking do we actually do during in a week’s time and maybe we just need to not have all those drinks stored in the laundry room fridge anyway? We eat a lot less actual meals with just the two of us and usually just drink water so do we really need all those drinks unless we are having a lot of folks over for the holidays, pot lucks and that sort of thing…

We could get a fridge that matched our built in appliances (except for the harvest gold cooktop which I am hoping to replace someday–hopefully very SOON) instead of sticking with this white one that was such a great deal I could not pass it up at the time. But then, white doesn’t look all that bad in here with the white stained oak cabinetry and the money we save could bring us even closer to the day the 1970′s cooktop gets replaced. The savings by fixing up the old one would also help reduce the impact of the big pile of cash we just parted with to get each of our cars roadworthy again, too…

    Decisions….decisions…..

  • Pitch it. You can get a new one for about 200 bucks more, and salesmen will dicker on the price these days.

  • Yup, for that price, pitch it.

  • @Bricker59 - Canadian dollars must go farther than US dollars, then–to replace the model i have (which has an icemaker and a bottom freezer but none of that thru-the-door dispensing junk) it will be close to $1000, even for a scratch & dent sale fridge…

  • Isn’t the government offering rebates on major appliances. We replaced our second refrigerator( I keep one in the garage), last month and got a rebate. I am not sure if it is still in effect.

  • For that amt. of money you can always get a good used to too.

  • I don’t think I’d be wanting to put that amount into an older appliance, however, my husband probably would do it…He believes in fixing things until there is no hope left and if he can fix it with duct tape and elmers glue all the better!

  • Wow, appliances make my head spin!  Sounds like you are having some of the same appliance befuddlement going on that I do!  LOL  You know, when you get rid of your harvest gold cooktop, call me, and we can have a bonfire with TWO of them!  I don’t even care if I still don’t have a new oven – living with an open hole in the wall will be worth it, to watch that puppy burn!

    Good luck with your decisions!

  • Force donkey guy to work overtime…..you need the money

  • Just do like they did in the olden days and pack all your food in salt. You don’t need a fridge.

  • You’re decisions are pretty evenly matched I think. It seems like you’ve argued your way out of every scenario. Let me know what the ultimate outcome is – maybe you should give up cooking althogether and just eat out??? LOL

  • @maddlines - i actually got a rebate from the power company 7 years ago when i got rid of the 20-something year old fridge that this one replaced…
@styx_site - if i am going with a used one, i will stick with the one i have. we are used to the way each other works
@Still_groovy - it might be a while before any more kitchen stuff gets done since the most expensive items are what’s left…
@PPhilip - he is already working a lot of extra hours but, alas that does not mean more $$ on a monthly salary–it just means that he will be less likely to get laid off during the next round of budget cuts. “need” doesn’t really apply here, but “want” could.
@Aloysius_son - i guess folks with high blood pressure just died if there wasn’t fresh food back in those days…
@azcason - the decision has been made–we will fix this one and hope for the best. that idea about just eating sounds kinda cool, too

  • Did you get the fridge yet? You have to have one before it gets any hotter there!

  • @thankee - the parts have been ordered and the repair is scheduled for Monday afternoon so i do not have miss my yoga class. we do have our “drink fridge” in the laundry room in the meantime for those chilly things (like eggs, milk and such) that we always seem to have on hand, but i will be thrilled to be able cook in the kitchen and more easily get to the washing machine in the laundry room again. you would think after more than a week i would be “reprogrammed” but even now, i STILL open that kitchen fridge door without thinking, looking for what i want or need in there…

  • I think I am going to have to buy a dryer. :bummer:

    Did you like Blind Side?

  • @lindaintennessee - that is a bummer about the dryer. after the repair bills on both the cars we had last month, fixing our fridge just seemed more like the thing to do for us. it was even “more better” after the guy that fixed it told me that i was billed incorrectly for the parts on the estimate and the actual bill was almost $200 LESS than the original guy quoted…

  • @lindaintennessee - i liked the book and the movie–each for different stuff. they did not put a lot of the background data about how the game of football has evolved over the last decade or so in the movie and i am still trying to decide if that was a good thing or a not-so-good thing…

  • HAPPY MOTHERS DAY
